    Promoting Flying Scot One-Design Sailing on the Detroit River

    The Interclub Flying Scot Committee (IFSC) promotes and develops Club Flying Scot racing among the IFSC member clubs.

  • Interclub Flying Scot Racing

    Overview

    Since the late 1950s, the Interclub Flying Scot Committee has been organizing Flying Scot competitions among the member clubs. Each year, the Interclub Flying Scots hosts the River Championship for advanced and novice skippers as well as a racing series in coordination with DRYA events that are particular to Flying Scot one-design racing.

    Interclub Counter Series

    There are a number of Flying Scot specific events hosted by various member clubs. Each year, the racing committee designates which races will be counted toward a series score to determine the overall season champions as well as seasonal awards. Details can be found in the Notice of Race (NoR).

    River Championship

    The River Championship is an event where each member club sends skippers to compete for the title of River Champion. There are awards for men, women, and novice champions.

    Individual Season Awards

    • Leipprandt Trophy - Awarded to the skipper who wins the Interclub Flying Scot Counter Series
    • Lee Greening Trophy - Awarded to the skipper who finishes highest in the Interclub Flying Scot Counter Series who also graduated from one of the Interclub sailing programs in the last 3 years and has not previously won the award
    • Crosby Trophy - Mens/Open River Champion
    • Shultz Trophy - Women's River Champion
    • Novice Champions - Awards to the Mens and Women's novice champions

    Club Season Awards

    • Kroelich Trophy - Awarded to the club with the lowest cumulative series score based on the club’s best finisher in each regatta
    • Wilkinson Trophy - Awarded to the club with the lowest cumulative series score based on the club’s best Greening eligible finisher in each regatta.

    Note that each club hosting a regatta in the counter series also awards regatta prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. In some cases, they will also designate specific awards for novices.

    For over a hundred years, DRYA has promoted and helped organize yacht racing among the numerous sailing clubs in southeast Michigan that represent DRYA's member clubs.

    The DYC has a long tradition of sailing programs available to varied interests, skill levels and ages. As a premier US Sailing member organization and founding member of the 100+-year-old Detroit Regional Yacht-Racing Association (DRYA), the DYC is a strong advocate for Detroit sailing. In addition to its long running learn-to-sail program, each year the DYC hosts both the Memorial Regatta and the Fall Sweepstakes Regatta, as well as Flying Scot specific regattas.

    A member-run club occupying a central location on Lake Saint Clair east of Detroit in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan. Crescent Sail Yacht Club (CSYC) is focused on the promotion and enjoyment of sailing and has something to offer sailors of all interests and skill sets. CSYC runs a major one-design regatta and an annual summer DRYA regatta.

    A Detroit-based sailing and boating club originally founded for employees and retirees of Detroit Edison continues to offer sailing lessons to the public and sponsors a DRYA-sanctioned regatta on Lake Saint Clair and a Flying Scot specific event in the river.

    The DBC offers a wide variety of activities for boaters and non-boaters alike and owns a fleet of Flying Scots, which are used for pleasure sailing and to continue the long tradition of instructing future sailors. Each year, the DBC hosts a DRYA-sanctioned regatta in conjunction with the Grosse Pointe Club.

    Located at the Belle Isle Boat House (the original home of the Detroit Boat Club), the DCSC is a community-based organization, open to the public, offering youth and adults the opportunity to learn to sail and enjoy Detroit's rich marine environment.​
